Kona's compact cargo bike is ready to haul your stuff. Courtesy: konaworld.com |
Do you remember when we told you about Yuba's Boda Boda? Basically, Yuba took its full-size cargo bike, the Mundo, and made it more compact so apartment dwellers and people dealing with tight spaces could own a cargo bike. It was a really good idea. And that's what Kona is doing here.
Kona took its full-size cargo bike, the Ute, and made it more compact. So it's a mini-Ute, or a MinUte. Get it?
This is a solid design for a cargo bike: hydraulic disc brakes; wide 40c tires; long chainstays and "wood deck" rear carrier; upright riding position; and lots of gear options. The Ute bags are included.

Wow! I love it!
I miss the Ute, but then again I never bought one, so can't complain they took it off their list. It wasn't perfect, but its price-point for what you got blew the Big Dummy, Boda-Boda and others out of the water.
If North American roads were safer, which is to say people didn't drive like sociopaths on pot, they'd move a lot more of these for parents to put child seats on; nobody uses a trailer in Japan or Denmark or Holland, and cars don't bully family bikes off the road! It's about time the big bike makers push far harder for the type of road laws and facilities civilized nations have.
Ἀντισθένης - I was not aware that Kona had discontinued the Ute. It's still featured on their website.
Last year, Minute, no Ute; this year, Ute, no Minute. Ute's price is also up a few hundred, but still kills the competitors at price/value. Has hydraulic brakes now, which may stop better, but will become a shop-trip for more users, so mixed feelings.
Ἀντισθένης - Thanks for bringing this up. I have not been able to confirm with Konaworld, but you appear to be correct.
