As a commenter recently pointed out, Raleigh added the 2013 Tripper to its 2012 "Three's Company" cyclocross line-up of the Furley and Roper. Here's hoping that in 2014 Raleigh offers a Snow in honor of Suzanne Somers' character Chrissy Snow or a Wood in tribute to Joyce DeWitt's character Janet Wood.
As with the Furley and Roper, the Tripper is all steel - in fact, it's available with a clear coat so you can really live the steel. The Tripper has a 3-speed IGH, disc brakes, and 700 x 32 tires. There are mounts for fenders and racks.
I'm personally not excited by the flat, straight handlebars, which they identify as the Avenir Short Drops. It seems to be an attempt at an urban look, but I'd rather see some bars with curves so that there are more available hand positions.
The Tripper got some attention at the 2012 interbike, as reported by Cyclelicious and Bike Rumor.

Loving the steel frame, but why would you want a bike like this with flat bars?

Why would you want any kind of bars that much lower than the seat? I hope they don't cut the steerer tube like that at the factory!
In the youtube video from 2012 interbike (at about the 2:30 mark), the Raleigh PR guy says the Tripper has an integrated stem and bar "to keep it looking clean." ???
Maybe you're supposed to steer with your knees.
I'm guessing that the reason that Raleigh decided to go with the flat bars, besides the "Urban" styling is the fact that the only shifter available for the inter 3 hub is a twister. Word in the interwebs has it that a Sturmey Archer bar-end shifter works with the Shimano hub better than the Shimano shifter. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
So change the bar and shifters. Duh.
Continues to amaze and disappoint me that people want big bike companies to be their mommy.
Anon 5:37 - thanks for the info. It's definitely plausible based the bikes I've seen with Shimano Nexus.
Anon 8:04 - Here's a general rule of thumb: If a customer pays for a complete bike, he or she wants a complete bike. If the customer is forced to buy bars and shifters separately, then that customer would be better off buying a frame.
Just bought one. I knew the bars might be a deal breaker...they either fit you right or they don't. Fortunately, they fit me. I took the bike on a long test ride to be sure, I'm sure the shop thought I stole it. I did put bar ends on it for more hand positions.
I think this is a super fun bike.
Just got one and will be changing the bars to drops with linear-pull drop bar levers & a Sturmey 3-speed bar end shifter.
I've used a Nexus 3-speed with that shifter before (on a Cross-Check) & can confirm that they work great together.
